the dome of Semifonte
The Dome of Semifonte rises over the hills as a quiet memorial to a vanished city. Built in 1597 as a faithful 1:8 scale reproduction of Brunelleschi’s great dome in Florence, the chapel marks the place where the medieval fortress of Semifonte once stood before its destruction in 1202.
Surrounded by gentle slopes, vineyards, and ancient farmsteads, the Dome of Semifonte stands like a watchtower over the Val d’Elsa. Its perfect geometry contrasts with the softness of the surrounding hills, creating one of the region’s most symbolic panoramas. Here, the past is not distant: it lives in the silence of the fields, in the horizon shaped by generations, and in the profound sense of place that defines these lands.
